Cosmetology Operator
The Cosmetology Program at Lamar State College-Port Arthur prepares students for a career as a cosmetology professional. The recommended courses of study are designed to meet licensure requirements established by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.

Career Information
A cosmetologist is a professional who provides beauty treatments and services to clients. They specialize in enhancing and maintaining the physical appearance of their clients through a variety of techniques, including hair styling, makeup application, skin care, and nail treatments. Cosmetologists work in a wide range of settings, such as salons, spas, and beauty parlors. They can also work in the film, television, or theater industries, where they create looks for actors and performers.
Cosmetologists must have excellent communication and customer service skills, as they work directly with clients to determine their needs and preferences. They also need to be knowledgeable about the latest beauty trends and products, and have a keen eye for detail to create customized looks that complement their clients' features and personalities. Additionally, cosmetologists must adhere to strict health and safety regulations to ensure that their services are provided in a clean and sanitary environment, and that their clients are not at risk of injury or infection.
Cosmetology Registration Fee
All Cosmetology Students must be registered with the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation before the first-class day. The $25 registration can be paid for at the business office or with a debit card. Bring a copy of your receipt to orientation. Transfer Cosmetology students’ fee is waived, but a copy of your cosmetology transcript is needed. All transfer students MUST take a placement exam, see Ms. Smith for additional information.
Orientation
New Cosmetology students must attend the orientation date listed below. Students will not be allowed to start class until they are registered with TDLR (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - Cosmetology licensing board). Pictures
TDLR mandates a current picture on every student registered in a cosmetology program. This picture will be placed on your cosmetology permit and folder. Email one picture or bring two pictures to orientation.
Immunization Requirements:
- Tb Skin Test (within last 6 months) Submit this information during orientation, or no later than the first-class day.
- Bacterial Meningitis (LSCPA requirement)—must be taken 10 days prior to the first-class day and submitted to the admissions department at LSCPA.

Dress Code
Each student is required to adhere to the dress code policy set by the LSCPA Cosmetology Program and the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.
Every student must be in uniform BEFORE clocking in and remain in uniform at all times.
Dress code requirements are as follows:
- Unisex Scrub Top, Pants & Lab Jacket – All Black
- Shoes: Tennis Shoes (any color) or Work Force
- Hair must be neat and presentable daily. (You are your biggest advertisement)
- Nails: Safety precaution, all nails should be of average length. Nails may not be longer than the end of the finger.
Lamar State College-Port Arthur mandates the completion and passing of all Cosmetology courses with a “C” or better to attain the knowledge and skills needed to pass your state board exam.
Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation mandates the completion and passing of all the registered modules (courses) to be eligible to take the state board exam. Students must be in attendance to receive credit.

How long does it take to complete the Cosmetology Operator associate’s degree program?
The Cosmetology Operator program takes two years to complete.
