Emerging Leaders Program

Are you interested in developing your leadership skills and becoming active in student life and organizations at Lamar State College Port Arthur?  If so, the Lamar State College Port Arthur Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) may be for you. ELP provides an opportunity for a group of LSCPA community members to develop their understanding of leadership skills and gain practical leadership experience. ELP accepts a select group of students each year. These students will participate in the program throughout the entire academic year, in addition to other commitments required of program participants.

Only students willing to commit for the entire year should apply. Applicants are selected based upon their motivation and commitment to becoming involved in leadership at Lamar State College Port Arthur.  Communication and the ability to work well with others are also very important. No leadership experience necessary.

To qualify for the scholarship, which will be paid out in installments of $1,250 for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025, you must meet the following criteria:

Fall 2024

  • You are a first-time freshman at LSCPA
  • You have prior involvement experience in high school, church or community organizations, preferably in a leadership role
  • You graduated high school with a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)
  • You are enrolled in 12 or more hours for the Fall 2024 semester at LSCPA
  • Take a special Learning Frameworks class that focuses on leadership skills, worth 1 semester hour
  • Attend and actively participate in a Leadership Conference free of charge (off campus and out of town)
  • Attend and actively participate with LSCPA in assisting Student Activities, the Student Government Association with campus/community activities
  • Attend and actively participate at regular Student Government meetings
  • Become an active member of a LSCPA student organization, which includes attending weekly meetings, helping to plan organization events, and attending events when possible.   An excused absence* will be allowed for no more than one (1) LSCPA organization meeting PER SEMESTER.  You are expected to remain involved with the organization you choose for the duration of the year, unless scheduling conflicts prevent you from doing so.  If that happens, you must select another organization.  
    *In order for an organization meeting absence to be excused, you must ask the ELP Director at least 24 hours in advance via email and receive approval for the absence. 

Spring 2025

  • Pass the Emerging Leader Program Learning Frameworks class with at least a B
  • Achieve a minimum 2.5 GPA in Fall 2023 while successfully completing 9 hours or more
  • Minimum enrollment of 12 hours for the Spring 2025 semester
  • Attend and actively participate in monthly ELP meetings
  • Attend and actively participate with LSCPA in assisting Student Activities, the Student Government Association with campus/community activities
  • Attend and actively participate at regular Student Government meetings
  • Continue to be an active member of a LSCPA student organization, which includes attending weekly meetings, helping to plan organization events, and attending events when possible.  An excused absence* will be allowed for no more than one (1) LSCPA organization meeting PER SEMESTER.   • ELP Service Project- Collectively plan, implement, and attend the full duration of the annual ELP Service Project during pre-determined time frame on syllabus.  Planning the service project includes attending the planning meetings.  Implementing the service project means that you are in attendance for the full duration of the service project, from set-up to clean-up.  You may be excused* during any times that you have class.
    *You must notify the ELP Director of class conflict at least 2 weeks in advance via email and receive approval for your absence.

A campus-based committee will select the 2024-2025 Emerging Leader Program’s class.
